Strengthen Your Child’s Faith This Summer

Imagine your child doing this…

It All Starts With
The Summer Study

The Summer Study is a 10-week Bible study from June 3 to August 19, 2024 where children ages 5-18 explore and memorize Scripture in a fun and educational way. This summer, your child will learn how to study the Bible using 11 different study tools and methods such as:

  • Keywords
  • Cross-references
  • Background study
  • Personal application
  • Word studies
  • Keywords
  • Cross-references
  • Background study
  • Personal application
  • Word studies

Keywords

The Discovery Journal teaches children how to identify and mark keywords with a specific color to answer questions and see important truths more readily.

Cross-references

The Discovery Journal includes helpful cross-references that teach children how to explore a given verse or topic in another part of scripture.

Background Study

Each Discovery Journal unit includes a background study that provides useful historical and geographical context that brings Bible passages to life.

Personal Application

The Discovery Journal encourages children to apply Biblical lessons through fun exercises and personal reflection.

Word Study

The Discovery Journal uses original language word studies to teach children how to examine the meaning of keywords in Greek or Hebrew.

Build Christian Community

With your registration for the Summer Study program, you can join a local or virtual group with other registered participants where you can study Scripture and encourage each other during the Summer Study. Each group has a leader, called a host, who facilitates meetings for registered participants to practice memory verses, play games, and have community with like-minded friends.

Compete for $135,000 In Prize Money

At the end of the Summer Study, children ages 7-18 can take an online test to assess what they’ve learned. Students with the highest scores are invited to participate in the National Bible Bee Competition in November.

The top 120 participants in three age divisions (7-10, 11-14 and 15-18) compete for over $135,000 in prize money in a live head-to-head competition.

Got Questions?

Here are some of the most common questions we get about the Summer Study.

The Summer Study

What is the Summer Study?

The Summer Study is an 8 unit Bible study from June to August where children ages 5-18 explore and memorize Scripture in a fun and educational way.  The Summer Study is also the first step toward qualifying for the National Bible Bee Competition where participants compete for over $135,000 in prize money.

When is the Summer Study?

The 2024 Summer Study will run from June 3 to August 19, 2024.

Which Bible translation do you use?

We offer our Summer Study program and the National Bible Bee Competition in five Bible translations: ESV, KJV, NASB, NIV and NKJV. The Discovery Journal can be used with any of these Bible translations.  Your Summer Study registration includes memory passage cards that are in your preferred Bible translation.

How many Bible verses does my child need to learn during the Summer Study?

Summer Study participants memorize 14-15 memory passages over 10 weeks.  These passages range in length, depending upon the age division, and are typically 30 – 60 verses total.

When is registration for the Summer Study?

Pre-registration opens during the middle of March for members of the National Bible Bee community. You can sign up here.  Registration officially opens on March 12 and lasts until May 31.

Who can register for the Summer Study?

Students 5-18 years old who live in the USA can participate in the Summer Study program, although the competition is reserved for students ages 7-18.  Non-US citizens are welcome to participate in the Summer Study but are not able to compete for prize money.

How much does it cost to register for the Summer Study?

The Shelby Kennedy Foundation, which hosts the National Bible Bee, is a non-profit organization with a vision “to know God’s Word and make Him known.” We have intentionally kept registration fees as low as possible to allow as many families as possible to participate all the while being able to cover our ministry costs.  Summer Study registration starts at $35/child.

Do I need to register all my children for the Summer Study?

Every child between the ages of 5 and 18 who will actively participate in the Summer Study will need to be registered. We customize the depth and difficulty of the National Bible Bee materials and competition depending upon your child’s age on November 13. Each child will receive one of four editions of the Discovery Journal: Beginner (5-6), Primary (7-10), Junior (11-14) and Senior (15-18).

Children in the Beginner age division (5-6) can participate in the Summer Study, but they are not eligible to compete in the National Bible Bee competition.

I have children in different age divisions. Will they be studying the same material?

Yes. The Discovery Journal covers the same material in each division, but it is adjusted slightly to make it more age-appropriate. With regard to the memory passages specifically, they will overlap, with older children having a few more verses than younger children (i.e. A 14 year old might have Genesis 1:1-3 while a 17 year old might have Genesis 1:1-5).

What is the Discovery Journal?

At the heart of the National Bible Bee’s Summer Study program is the Discovery Journal, an inductive study that launches children on a journey through the Scriptures. The study teaches children to explore the Bible using 11 different study tools and methods such as: keywords, cross-references, background study, personal application, and original language word studies.

Does my child need to compete if I register for the Summer Study?

At the end of the Summer Study, your child may choose to take the online test to qualify for the National Bible Bee competition, but this is 100% optional.

How do I find a host group in my area?

When Summer Study registration is open, you will have the opportunity to search for a host group in your city. If there are no in-person groups available, you also have the option to sign up for an online group. If neither host group option is available to you, you can always complete the program on your own.

I’m unsure about my ability to guide my child through the Summer Study. Can we still participate?

Yes. The Summer Study is intentionally designed to give participants (and parents) a structured approach to studying and memorizing God’s Word. Neither you nor your child need to be a theologian to participate.

Can our whole family participate in theSummer Study?

Absolutely. Many of our families appreciate the opportunity to study God’s Word together. While only age-eligible children can register, adults are welcome to purchase the Discovery Journal and study along with their children.

My kids and I are not good at memorizing Scripture. Can we still participate?

Of course! The Summer Study is more than just Scripture memorization. In your Discovery Journal, you’ll enjoy fun activities, interesting facts and fascinating context that will help Scripture come to life. And the best part about the Summer Study is you don’t have to do it alone. By joining a host group, you will be able to meet other Christian families who can help encourage and support you along the way. You can do this!

Do you offer scholarships?

The National Bible Bee does not currently offer scholarships for Summer Study registration.

The National Bible Bee Competition

How do I qualify for the National Bible Bee Competition?

First register for the Summer Study! At the end of the summer, you will have the opportunity to take the NBBC Qualifying Test in August from your home computer or at a location of your choice (with a parent or adult to proctor you) and place in the top 120 contestants for your division.

How much does the National Bible Bee Competition cost?

We strive to keep costs down for our families and registration fees may vary year to year. In addition to the registration fee, contestants and at least one parent are required to stay at specified venue hotels, usually ranging in the price of $140-160 a night.

I learned about this program after registration closed, can I still compete?

Only students ages 7-18 who registered for the Summer Study program are eligible to compete in the National Bible Bee Competition.  You can still order the Discovery Journal from our online store and sign up for our mailing list to get notified when registration opens for next year!

How many Bible verses does my child need to learn for the National Bible Bee Competition?

Do you offer scholarships?

The National Bible Bee does not currently offer scholarships for the National Bible Bee Competition.

Should I take the NBBC Qualifying test if I am not interested in qualifying for NBBC?

Yes! Remember the results are confidential and you have nothing to lose. You may be surprised at how much you learned even if you didn’t finish the study. Also, you will get to see what the test is like and maybe it will motivate you to learn even more next year.
